Dance is one of the oldest and most important social and artistic expressions of the Greek people. Greek folk dances are classified as either "syrtos", shuffling dances or "pidkos", leaping dances. Their music and dance greatly influenced the development of contemporary Greek popular music, including "bouzouki" (a Greek stringed instrument) music.
