TRADITIONAL GREEK FOOD - LEPTOKARIA

Many greeks as well as tourists prefer to eat out in the so-called "tavernas" as greek restaurants are called, in the cool of the evening.

The country's cuisine shows the influence of turkish rule, particulary in the popularity of dishes such as souvlaki, skewered (meat), doner kebab (spit-roasted meat), and honey-based sweetmeats such as baklava and kadayifi.

The tavernas are placed everywhere in the resort but the most beautiful ones are those that are situated on the beach. The waiters are very nice and polite and the large majority of them knows four or five international languages.

From tourists' experiences this resort is not specialised on the all inclusive idea, but more of a HB. All in all the food is very tastefull. The sallads are great.

The food is based on fresh, tasty seasonal products, lots of salads. Generally it's not hot, or too spicy - oregano, salt, lemon, olive oil, garlic are the usual extras.

Tastes are very definite (for some people, like me, sour may taste very sour, sweet will be very sweet, salty might be very salty) and they are not mixed (no sweet and sour sauces, no raisins or fruit with meat or salads etc).

Want something sweet, cold and refreshing: try icecreams and granitas .Sweets are practically non-existent in tavernas - there is just a lot of good food.

The menus here are written in English but also in french, german and romanian and, of course, greek.

Greek Nouvelle Cuisine? Only in top class restaurants! Lots of tasty, simple food!

Greek coffee, boiled in small metal containers with a handle, may be served in small cups but it will be strong, almost bitter. Most Greeks I knew (and generally Mediterraneans and Balkan people) were always complaining that the coffee served in British outlets is a "soup", a diluted brown potion. Well, all is a matter of taste, for my British friends would generally find Greek coffee too strong. Greek coffee is also very expensive!
